My Favorite Japanese Sodas

One of the fun things to try in a new country is snacks or sodas. Japan has vending machines absolutely everywhere and a lot of interesting caffeine-free sodas to sample. You’ve likely heard of and maybe even tried ramune, which has the bead in the bottle neck. But there are so many more sodas to explore!

Skal

You can find your favorite sodas in vending machines in Japan

My favorite soda in Japan was Skal, a milk soda. That sounds odd, but it’s like a cream soda in flavor. Very fizzy, mildly sweet. Highly refreshing.

Sangaria Melon Soda

I enjoyed melon soda in Japan as well. Melon is a very popular flavor. This one is sweet and tangy and very delicious.

Pocari Sweat

Pocari Sweat sounds utterly unappetizing, yet it is a mild sports drink. Nice if you want hydration with a hint of flavor.

Fanta Melon Soda

Fanta melon was a lot sweeter than the other melon sodas I had. It had a cream soda element, but somehow ended up tasting like bubble gum to me. Not my favorite. But I liked the bottle-shaped can!

Olive Soda

Got this on Naoshima. It sounds very strange but actually I wished it had tasted more strongly of olive. As it was it was sweet with a mild olive oil type taste.

Calpis Soda

Calpis is also a milk soda, but I didn’t like it nearly as much as Skal.

Sprite Cranberry

This doesn’t seem at all unusual but I’ve never seen it here in the US. It was good. Also, it was clear.

Melon & Calpis

Melon & Calpis

Another melon cream soda, less sweet by far than the Fanta melon. But a little disappointing.

Mango Skal

I had very high hopes for this given that I loved Skal and like mango flavor. But somehow this did not live up to what I expected. Give me regular Skal any day.

There were lots of other cool sodas that I didn’t get a chance to try. I look forward to trying more on my next trip to Japan!
