Interesting Fact: Neon Crosses

If you look at a Korean city at night, you’ll see lots of different lights as is pretty typical in any large city. But perhaps the lights you’ll notice most will be the red neon crosses atop almost every church.
Korea is a very competitive country, especially in the way that if you’ve got something, I’ve got to have it. The red neon crosses are a form of competition between the churches; they’re trying to bring in followers. But now almost every church has one, so they no longer really stand out – but remember, it’s important to have what others have, so this makes sense.
Apparently in the past churches used bells to attract people (and on Deokjeokdo I heard some loud electronic bells going on for quite a while). But now they’ve moved to the crosses. Apparently the red symbolizes the blood of Christ. It’s a pretty interesting tactic, anyway.
